Tomoca coffee is d* straight, 3 palms a pound, and I get excited when waking up at 3 in the morning with Sanbate to drink it.

The girl survived extensive bloodletting today. In fact, she walked away with her sense of humor fully intact.

Tomorrow is her birthday so we have every intention of spoiling her in every way. Lord girl! You made it through one year! Despite!

I am so grateful to sister Askale, the resident nurse pictured here with our coy smiler, for accompanying me to the hospital on our first day. I don't care what the statistics say, my experience with Ethiopians both men and women has lead me to feel devoted to them and to feel they are gentle and extremely loving people.

We adore Sister Askale. She nursed our twin girls back from the brink of death (and did so for one of them a number of times). When we met her, she shook our hands, nodded at the babies in our arms, and said, in her indomitable manner, "these are MY children". When our littlest - and most fragile - one hit 5 kg while we were in Ethiopia (in October/November of 2007), Sister broke down and cried (both babies had weighed less than 2 kg when they came into care at 2 months of age). She had stayed countless nights with her in the hospital because she said she couldn't bear to leave her with another nurse or a nanny. She is a most amazing woman. And these days, we send HER regular updates on weights and heights. I hope your little one's health improves (neither of our girls have been sick once since being home).
